Experience

I believe it is very important for our local District Court Judges, and all judges, to possess a wide and varied legal expertise. The type of cases heard by a District Court Judge range from civil disputes to criminal matters to domestic law among many other areas of the law. I have been practicing law for 25 years, representing clients in Edgecombe, Nash and Wilson counties. I have litigated numerous cases in our District and Superior Courts, with the majority of my practice being in the District Court. A normal day for me involves appearing in at least one or more courts, often appearing in court in Tarboro, then Rocky Mount, Nashville, and sometimes Wilson. My extensive time spent in these courts and working with their fantastic staff has been a highlight of my career to date. I have a wealth of trial experience in both criminal and civil court and I tried numerous bench trials and jury trials to successful outcomes. I have represented clients in traffic, criminal, juvenile, DSS, civil, domestic, child support, mental health, probate, real estate, corporate, municipal and foreclosure matters and other areas of the law. In my numerous years of service on the court-appointed list, I have served countless indigent clients in Edgecombe County. In addition to representing my individual clients, I also proudly serve as the attorney for the Town of Dortches, Braswell Memorial Public Library and NEWCA, Inc. as well as numerous other corporate entities.

Respect

I am dedicated to following and upholding the law, ensuring that all parties are treated fairly and respectfully and protecting the rights of all people. I have earned the respect of my peers, judicial officials and clients through hard work, determination and knowledge of the law, but most importantly by being polite, friendly and treating everyone as a human, with dignity and respect. I will give respect but also demand respect of all those who come into my courtroom. I will make sure that every person in my courtroom is heard, understood and empathized with.

Service

I believe that service to your community is the best way to understand all the varieties of people in your community. It is my civic duty to try to understand my community and better it through service and to that end, I have participated or currently participate as a board member or volunteer with the Rocky Mount Area Chamber, Tar River Kiwanis, Rocky Mount Friends of the Arts, Communities in Schools, Tri-County Industries, Meals on Wheels, Rocky Mount Board of Adjustment, Rocky Mount Housing Authority, Rocky Mount Planning Board and the North Carolina Crime Victim’s Compensation Committee. My experience in the courtroom and my service to my community crafted my commitment to fairness, respect of others and a requirement that everyone be treated equally under the law.
